Exhibition “Characters: Between Fiction and Reality”
Characters: Between Fiction and Reality is an exhibition that invites viewers to immerse themselves in a setting where characters, as protagonists, become the starting point for a myriad of emotions, connections, and reflections. Through works by renowned Mexican artists such as Rufino Tamayo, Arturo Rivera, Nahum Zenil, Filemón Santiago, Alfredo Castañeda, Alejandro Arango, Dulce María Nuñez, Arturo Marty, Enrique Canales, and Claudio Fernández, we encounter diverse characters: the magician, the orator, the smoker, the angel, the wanderer, the painter, the hunter… figures that have been represented and narrated through art.
These characters are mostly born from the creator's imagination. However, once represented, they acquire a "life of their own," allowing them to transcend beyond the canvas and words, gaining strength and significance as they interact with the viewer. These figures, so present and tangible in the artworks, act as triggers for sensations and stories that often resonate with our own experiences. Whether through their mystery, fragility, or power, they invite us to deep introspection, generating questions and emotions that connect us to what they evoke.
In art, we find both fictional characters, who exist only in imaginary worlds, and real-life ones, belonging to our everyday reality. Yet, when represented, they seem to acquire an almost magical quality that blurs the line between what is real and what is fictitious. The Characters: Between Fiction and Reality exhibition seeks to intertwine painting and poetry, creating a bond in which visual artworks are complemented by poems that mention, invoke, or are inspired by these characters.
This convergence of disciplines fosters a dialogue between images and words, inviting viewers to establish connections with the depicted figures and discover how art and literature can transform a portrait into a unique and emotional narrative. By connecting these two forms of expression, the exhibition enriches itself to inspire reflections on the many ways the human imagination can be portrayed. Each artwork, whether visual or literary, becomes an open door to new interpretations, emotions, and reflections.
In this sense, the exhibition aims to inspire both students and the broader community, encouraging them to explore and create their own stories, tales, and poems. The artworks presented here are a call for contemplation, but above all, an invitation for every viewer to express their creativity and imagine new worlds.
